This Food Additive Is in Some Shrimp: Check the Label

Have you ever checked the ingredients on a bag of frozen shrimp?

I did and found sodium metabisulfite, a sulfiting agent used in some seafood processing.

That sent me straight down the rabbit hole.

Sulfites are particularly important for people who are sensitive to them because they can cause allergic-type reactions, including potentially serious asthma symptoms in susceptible individuals.

And here's what makes the label worth paying attention to: sulfiting agents have restrictions on their use with fresh fruits and vegetables sold raw, yet they may also be found in products such as **shrimp, lobster, wine, and other foods.

I had runny nose and throat symptoms after eating the shrimp shown in this video.

Read the ingredient label—even when you're buying something as simple as shrimp.

Especially if you're eating keto, carnivore, or a whole-food diet and assume the package contains nothing except the food pictured on the front.

Have you ever found an ingredient in something that completely surprised you?
