Antique Tractor Show with Randy's Best of Show Deutz

Andrew Anderson here for The Longer Crowbar, and I'm at the antique tractor show in Montgomery County, Tennessee.

This time I'm talking with Randy, whose 1966 Deutz took Best of Show.

And this is one seriously cool old tractor.

It's a German-made Deutz with a two-cylinder, air-cooled diesel engine.

No spark plugs.

No complicated modern electronics.

Air and fuel, compression, and good old-fashioned mechanical engineering.

Randy walked me around the tractor and showed me the exposed push rods that operate the valves, letting air into the engine and exhaust back out.

You can actually stand there and SEE part of the engine working.

That's one of the things I love about old machinery.

Look at how heavily everything was built.

This tractor is roughly 60 years old, won Best of Show, and here's the best part:

Randy still uses it.

I asked him whether he could put this tractor back to work on the farm today.

His answer?

He already does.

He pulls a hay rake with it.

That's my kind of antique. 😂

You can clean it up, take it to a tractor show, win Best of Show, and then take the thing home and put it back to work.

That's a testament to both the original engineering and the person who has cared for it all these years.

Congratulations to Randy on Best of Show.

And thanks for giving me—and everybody watching—a closer look at a really cool piece of German agricultural engineering.
