The Truth About Food Additives: Check Your Shrimp

Check the ingredients on your shrimp.

Andrew "Easy" Anderson is back with a follow-up after finding sodium metabisulfite listed on another package of shrimp—this time while shopping at Sam's Club.

Sodium metabisulfite is one of several sulfiting agents used in food processing. Sulfites have been used on shrimp to help prevent discoloration or "black spot."

Here's why Andrew thinks people should pay attention:

Sulfites can cause potentially serious reactions in people who are sensitive to them, particularly some people with asthma.

Andrew believes sodium metabisulfite may have contributed to the reaction he recently experienced, although that can't be determined from the video alone.

The bigger message?

Read your food labels.

Don't assume something contains only one ingredient just because it looks like a simple whole food.

Shrimp can have additional ingredients too.

Check the package. Know what you're buying. And if you or someone in your family has asthma or a known sulfite sensitivity, understanding what's on that ingredient label can be especially important.

Don't take somebody's social media post as the final word either.

Look it up. Verify it. Then make your own decision.
