Say No To Any Farm Raised Seafood
Say No To Any Farm-Raised Seafood
When I'm buying seafood, I personally look for wild-caught whenever I can.
I'm especially picky about salmon and shrimp.
Farm-raised seafood is a huge industry, and how those fish are raised, what they're fed, and how they're treated can vary depending on the species, producer, country, and farming method.
One thing a lot of people don't realize is that farmed salmon may receive astaxanthin in its feed to produce the familiar reddish-orange flesh color. Wild salmon gets astaxanthin naturally through its diet.
That doesn't automatically make farmed salmon unsafe, but it's another reason I believe you should know where your seafood comes from and how it was raised.
There are also genetically engineered Atlantic salmon. The FDA has approved AquAdvantage Salmon as safe to eat, and current U.S. rules require applicable genetically engineered salmon products to carry a bioengineered-food disclosure.
Personally, I still prefer wild-caught.
That's my choice.
When I'm standing in the seafood section, I'm looking at more than the price.
Wild-caught or farm-raised?
Where did it come from?
What's on the label?
How was it produced?
I'm trying to know as much as possible about the food I'm putting into my body.
Don't just take my word for it.
Read the label. Research where your seafood comes from. Then make the decision that's right for you.
For me, I'm sticking with wild-caught whenever I can.
